You can’t go wrong with a pair of brogues for men
Brogues began life as shoes for outdoor work and life. The distinctive pattern of holes was originally a practical measure to allow water to escape from wet shoes when walking over squelchy ground.
Brogues slowly became popular as a sports shoe, and racy designs were often to be seen on the golf course. As men’s brogues continued to evolve into fashionable indoor footwear, there was an important change. The holes punched in the leather uppers began to be confined to the edges of the seams visible on the uppers. Full brogues still retain the pattern of holes on the toes but with a leather lining to ensure that the upper is completely watertight.
You will love our carefully edited collection of men’s dress shoes, and of course you will want to check out our range of men’s brogues, including some edgy designer takes on the brogue tradition. The brogue patterns may now be purely decorative, but they are as popular as they ever were with well-dressed gentlemen everywhere.
Ancient and modern takes on men’s brogues
You will be intrigued by the modern take on a brogue provided by some of the designers we have included in our selection. The traditional men’s brogue pattern has inspired our designers to refresh the punched hole arrangement in several ways, sometimes by increasing the number of holes and introducing a geometric distribution, sometimes by adding just a small echo of the brogue style in an unexpected location on the shoe.
The brogue pattern can be applied to several classic shoe styles, making them appropriate footwear for many outfits. Try a shiny back quarter-brogue with a smart charcoal grey lounge suit, for example, or a dark brown full brogue, or possibly the classic oxblood brogue, with a tweed suit or a pair of flannel trousers and a sports jacket.
Brogues are equally at home as part of a casual outfit where there is room for a lot more variety. How about a pair of blue suede brogues to go with denim, or light tan leather brogues with the full wing-tip design to go with a pair of chinos or moleskin trousers?
